CHURUBUSCO — Whitley County’s golf teams began match play Tuesday at Eel River Golf Course.

Columbia City came away with the win at 163 strokes, followed by Churubusco with 170 and Whitko at 203.

Columbia City’s Nick Decker was match medalist with 38 strokes, follwed by Churubusco’s Trey Mayer and Columbia City’s Spencer McCammon, who carded 39s.

Though there were only three players who scored in the 30s, Columbia City head coach Andrew Thompson said he thinks the teams performed well for the first night out on a chilly, windy night.

“There was a little nerves out there,” Thompson said. “We had players who were in new positions.”

Columbia City has three players returning from their state finalist team from last year, however, the players we’re comfortably resting on the shoulders of graduated players Tyler Green, Spencer Klimek and Cameron Slavich. Now, they’re the top three on the Eagles’ roster.

“We have loads of experience,” Thompson said. “They have aspirations of doing great things, but it is going to take hard work and a little bit of luck. Hopefully their confidence starts to click and the leaders emerge.”

Other scores for Columbia City Tuesday evning include: Zach Harker, 43; Garrett Roehling, 43; and Cameron Hall, 45.

Scoring for Churubusco were: Mike Erwin, 41; Wyatt Gillenwater, 41; Reece Partin, 49; and Dakota Barkley, 52.

Whitko has four golfers on its team this season. Scorers included: Cade Bechtold, 46; Tim Gensch, 48; Kaleb Busz, 48; and Cole Cmar, 61.
