CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football team took a blow-out win over Lakeland Friday in the Eagles’ home opener, 42-6.
While last week’s Churubusco game against Whitko began with strong offensive play, scoring in the opening kickoff, this week’s game started with the Eagles’ stifling defense.
The Eagles quickly forced a Lakeland punt, then came back to score on their first possession after an impressive reception and dive for the end zone by Sam Wood.
The 19-yard touchdown at the 7:11 mark was the first of many in the first quarter for Churubusco, which had a 20-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Quarterback Tom Richards scored the second touchdown of the quarter, keeping the ball for a 7-yard run with 3:27 on the clock.
With 47.7 seconds left in the first, Richards completed a pass to Blake Trostel for another Eagle touchdown. After a blocked point-after attempt, Churubusco led 20-0.
Lakeland got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a rushing touchdown by Gage Paulus. Paulus led the Lakers with 58 rushing yards on seven attempts.
Churubusco went on to score 22 more points in the third quarter, including touchdowns by Nate Keener, Gage Kelly and another from Richards.
Minutes into the second half, Wood broke away for a 67-yard run to score. Jake Fulk completed the two-point conversion to make the score 28-6.
Keener scored on a 6-yard run three minutes later, and Kelly reached the end zone with two minutes left in the third on a 30-yard run.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, making the final score 42-6.
Richards was 7-for-9 in the air for 104 yards. Trostel caught two passes for 60 yards and Wood caught two for 25.
The Eagles utilized several ballcarriers, led by Kelly with 79 yards on eight carries, Wood with 72 yards on three carries, Jake Fulk with 61 yards on four carries and Keener with 44 yards on 16 carries.
Lakeland quarterback A.J. Poe was 6-for-19 for 54 yards. Austin Collins caught two passes for 22 yards.
Overall, Churubusco recorded 407 offensive yards compared to Lakeland’s 162.
Case Lemper led the team in tackles with 4.5, followed by Wood with four and Joey Emenhiser with 3.5.
The Eagles are now 2-0 and host Garrett on Friday. Lakeland is 1-1 and hosts Prairie Heights next week.
