WHITLEY COUNTY — Whitley County’s girls basketball teams will hit the courts for sectional play next week.
Whitko and Churubusco jump straight to the sectional semi-finals after drawing the bye in their respective first rounds.
Columbia City (12-10) opens Wednesday against Mississinewa (13-9) at Norwell, with a game time of 7:30 p.m.
The winner of that game faces the winner of Marion (17-4) and Bishop Luers (12-7) in game two at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 1. The championship game is at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 2.
The Eagles have not faced Mississinewa since a sectional game in 2015 — winning 55-34.
Other teams in the sectional are Norwell (18-3), Bellmont (18-2) and Heritage (15-5).
The Norwell sectional is one of the toughest in Class 3A, with an overall combined record of 105-40 — the best in the state in all classes at 72.4 percent. The next closest is Class 2A North Judson’s sectional at 69.2 percent.
Whitko (4-15) competes in the Central Noble sectional, and opens in the 6 p.m. sectional semifinal game on Feb. 1, facing the winner of defending state champion Central Noble (21-0) and Westview (12-8), who play Jan. 29.
On the other side of the bracket, Bremen (15-6) and LaVille (5-15) play in round one on Jan. 29, and Prairie Heights (7-13) faces the winner in the semifinal. The championship game is at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2.
Churubusco (4-15) plays in the Bluffton sectional, and begins with the semi-final game against the winner of Eastside (6-13) and Bluffton (10-9).
Other teams in the sectional are Adams Central (10-10), Canterbury (0-9), and South Adams (10-10).
