Chocolate, book clubs and movies at SWCPL
Chocolate is delicious any time of the year, but it takes center stage in February. It also takes center stage at South Whitley Community Public Library Saturday during the annual children’s chocolate party.
Children are invited to the library at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, to celebrate chocolate. There will be edible crafts involving chocolate and bingo for chocolate prizes. Preregistration is requested for this free program.
Book clubs for everyone
There’s nothing better than talking about books with others. SWCPL has two book clubs open to adults. Page Turners meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month — Feb. 19 this month — to read and discuss general fiction stories. This month the club is reading Shadow Divers. Written by Robert Kurson, it is the true adventure of two Americans who risked everything to solve one of the last mysteries of WWII. It also comes as close as a book could to providing the approximate sensations of deep sea diving and of life on a submarine at war.
The After Dark Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of the month — Feb. 23 this month — at the AmVets. This club focuses on horror, sci-fi and supernatural stories and is for those age 21 and older. This month’s book is Horns by Joe Hill, the story of Ignatius Perrish who wakes up one morning with horns from his temples. He soon realizes that everyone has abandoned him…everyone that is, except the devil inside.
Books for either club are available at SWCPL. Stop by and inquire at the desk.
Sun & Sand film festival
Escape the dreary end-of-winter weather at the Sun & Sand Film Festival. The movies are free as are the popcorn and drinks.
We will be showing a movie starring Elvis Presley working as a tour guide in our 50th state at 1 p.m. on Feb. 11. The fun continues at 6 p.m. on Feb. 19 with the story of two different groups of children staking a claim to the same island in the film based on the book Swallows & Amazons by Arthur Ransome. The festival winds up at 1 p.m. on Feb. 25 with everybody’s favorite beach girl, Gidget.
