There are several different trades being completed at the site, from roofing and masonry on the exterior, to plumbing and electrical on the interior.

COLUMBIA CITY — On nearly any day, there are more than 100 people working at the construction site of the new Columbia City High School.

Site Manager Scott Conaway said the project is progressing well, considering some weather-related struggles.

“We’re progressing really well with the winter we’ve had,” Conaway said.

At this stage in the construction, there are typically 120-130 workers at the site — a number which is likely to increase as construction progresses.

“That number will grow even more,” Conaway said.

Shown is the auditorium area. Next, crews will add onto the front part of the building to include office and commons areas.

Conaway has a big job, managing the crews and of the massive project and making sure everyone and everything is accounted for.

“It’s a big place to walk with five acres under roof,” Conaway said.

Plastic covers the open window areas and the building is mostly heated, allowing crews to work more comfortably. There are currently 13-14 different trades working in the building, from plumbers, masons and electricians, to those installing items in the food service areas.

Conaway, who works for Skillman Corporation, is no stranger to large projects such as Columbia City’s, and has done several at a similar size.

Community members have seen the walls of the building go up quickly. While there are still several more walls to go up, the work going on inside the walls is extensive.

“We have a lot going on in the academics area right now,” Conaway said.

Conaway expects to be installing the artificial turf football field in March or April, and many of the athletic fields are already in preparation for play when the school opens in the summer of 2020.
