WHITLEY COUNTY — The popularity of contemporary church services has left many missing the old hymns they knew as children. Blue River Community Church in Thorncreek Township is addressing this sentimentality with an old-fashioned “Community Sing” on the evening of Good Friday, April 19.

Beginning at 6 p.m., 14 classic hymns will be sung. Blue River Community Church stands at the corner of Riley Road and CR 300N, about five miles northeast of Columbia City, two miles south of the Tri-Lakes.

Guests from other churches, John Alcock and Pamela Hoppe, will lead the singing and play the organ and piano.

When the present church building was dedicated 108 years ago, the ceremony was delayed so that a new organ could be dragged out to the site from Columbia City on the then-muddy and flooded roads of Whitley County. Music as a form of worship has always been important at Blue River Community Church from its earlier history as a log church on the same site.

All singers good and bad — everyone — is welcome to join in and help fill the church with music. Guests are encouraged to carpool as parking is limited.
