COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s track team finished just 16 points from first place at the Goshen sectional last Thursday.

The 13-team sectional was won by Elkhart Memorial with 88 points, followed by Elkhart Central with 84 and Columbia City with 72.

Other teams were: Concord (57 points), Warsaw (57), Goshen (55), Northridge (55), NorthWood (52), Wawasee (33), Elkhart Christian (32), Fairfield (18), Jimtown (13) and Bethany Christian (8).

Liam Hesting scored 20 points on his own for Columbia City, winning both the shot put and discus. Hesting threw the discus more than 24 feet farther than his closest opponent with a toss of 168 feet, 5 inches. He won shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 11.5 inches.

Landon Wakeman was sectional runner-up in the 1,600-meter run. He also placed ninth in the 3,200-meter run. Nathan Mills took fourth in the one-mile and 13th in the two-mile.

Alex Scharpenberg placed third in high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.

The Eagles’ 400-meter relay team of Jacob Wigent, Michael Sievers, Jon O’Dell and Doug Hill finished fourth.

Hill took fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 200.

Michael Sievers lept 20 feet, 10.75 inches in long jump to place fifth, and Bryce Taylor also took fifth in the 800-meter run.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Jacob Wigent, Cole Meyer, Bryce Taylor and Doug Hill came in fifth.

Wigent placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, followed by Jacob Bolt in seventh.

Kendall Smith took ninth and Cole Meyer finished 10th in the 300-meter hurdles.

Tyler Lane took 11th in the 400-meter dash followed by Zane Stewart in 13th.

The Eagles’ 3,200-meter relay team of Colyn Iden, Austin Hall, Josh Sparks and Isaac Hendricks finished 10th.

Those advancing, including Hesting, Scharpenberg and Wakeman, will compete in the Kokomo regional at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.
