COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys golf team picked the perfect time to get hot.

The Eagles placed second in the Warsaw sectional last week, earning their lowest score of the season at Rosella Ford Golf Course, 314, to advance to this week’s regional.

The Eagles were led by a pair of freshmen who handled the pressure of their first sectional well. Sean Bledsoe tied for second overall with a score of 73, and Alex Hedrick took 10th with a 77.

“They’ve got immense talent,” head coach Andrew Thompson said. “This has been coming for them, and we couldn’t have picked a better time for them to score 73/77. They were able to lead the way in their first high school sectional. It was a tremendous effort by a fairly young team we have out there.”

The Eagles’ score came as a surprise to some teams, such as Triton and Plymouth, which expected to place in the top three to advance.

“I don’t know if anyone was expecting this,” Thompson said. “Anyone who followed us from afar probably had no idea we’d be a factor.”

Prior to the sectional, Columbia City’s season-low was its 328 at the Northeast 8 Conference match.

The Eagles are no stranger to regional golf, as Columbia City has advanced from the sectional six of the last seven years.

“We have a good run going,” Thompson said.

Other scores for the Eagles were Wyatt Krider with an 80, tying for 16th; and Zach Harker and Mitchell Wilson with 84s, tying for 22nd.

Whitko placed ninth overall, led by Kylar Bryant with an 81, Jonathan Strayer with an 89, Dale Reiff with a 93 and Cade Bechtold with a 94.

The regional meet was hosted by Plymouth at Swan Lake Golf Course on Thursday. See next week’s edition of IN|Whitley County for coverage.
